Frequently Asked Questions about Girl Scouting

How old do you have to be to be a Girl Scout?

Membership in various Girl Scout groups is divided by grade levels: Daisies (K - 1), Brownies (2 - 3), Junior Girl Scouts (4 - 5), Cadette Girl Scouts (6–8), Senior Girl Scouts (9–10), and Ambassadors (11 - 12). Girls can join at any time. The opportunities and award possibilities increase as you grow.

Bronze, Silver, and Gold represent the highest honors a Girl Scout can earn.

What elements make up a Girl Scout uniform?
The following elements are required:
  • Girl Scouts at each level will have one official uniform item (e.g. tunic, vest, sash) for the display of official pins and awards. This uniform item will be required when girls participate in ceremonies or officially represent the Girl Scout Movement.
  • The official dress code will unite girls as Girl Scouts. Girl Scouts will wear solid white shirts and khaki pants or skirts with their official uniform item, which will be required when they participate in ceremonies or officially represent the Girl Scout Movement.
  • The adult uniforms will be a scarf worn with the membership pins for women and a tie for men. The scarf/tie and membership pins will be worn with navy blue business attire.
Here is a guide to insignia placement on the uniform along with your badges and journey awards.

How Can I Volunteer? What is involved?
We welcome volunteers! It takes a bunch of adult power to ensure an amazing experience for the girls. It is our courageous volunteers that drive our program. If you are short on time, that is not a problem. We need volunteers to assist at meetings, plan, drive girls to Girl Scout activities, go on trips, bring snacks, track fundraisers, etc. Whether you have an hour a week or five, your contribution makes a huge difference to us!

First, it is recommended that you activate your own membership. Especially if you plan on driving girls other than your own daughter or volunteer on camping trips or other away activities. This membership pays for insurance if something is to happen and is primary when something unforeseeable should occur. It also allows you to register for Council events.

All volunteers undergo a background check. ALL VOLUNTEERS. This is to ensure the safety of the girls at all times. It is very easy and is free. Please take a moment to fill out the Volunteer Application located at the Council Website. It is a simple form. You will receive an email in a few days confirming your volunteer status.

For Volunteers who want to be more involved, there is a place in the Troop and Service Unit that can use the help! There are specialized trainings available for volunteers, including Outdoor Training and First Aid/CPR. We appreciate any training you take above and beyond other volunteers! Check out the calendar on the Council website for training dates as well as the Volunteer Resources page for additional information.
